Horvath's testimony before the U.S. Senate Committee highlights a disturbing trend. Despite unprecedented access to technology, Gen Z is scoring lower on standardized tests than previous generations. This is not just about literacy and numeracy; it's about cognitive capability, which is declining. The introduction of the iPhone in 2007 and the rise of social media and gaming apps have contributed to this decline, as these platforms are designed to be addictive and keep users engaged for as long as possible.
In my opinion, the problem lies in the way technology has been integrated into the classroom. Teachers may intend for these tools to be educational, but students often use them for off-task activities. This not only hinders learning but also affects memory formation and increases error rates. The ease and convenience of technology have replaced the effort and discomfort that are essential for deep learning.
Jean Twenge, a psychology professor, agrees. She argues that sustained attention to a singular subject is crucial for learning, but technology has disrupted this process. The addictive nature of many apps and platforms encourages users to spend more time on screens, which is counterproductive to learning. However, the success of these bans varies.
Ultimately, the loss of critical thinking and learning skills is a policy failure, not a personal one. Gen Z is the victim of a failed pedagogical experiment, and it's crucial that they recognize this. As Horvath says, 'This is not your fault. None of you asked to be sat in front of a computer for your entire K-12 schooling.'
